International Women’s Day

Today is the 8th March and it is International Women’s Day. So, I have put together a collection of greeting cards in this post from Phoenix Trading that feature women or inspiration. Some of the designs are inspirational and motivational, whilst others are about the unique bonds of female relationships and friendship. Together we can be strong and fight for a fairer world. A world where gender is not a barrier to your dreams and success.

As a team leader and Executive Trader within Phoenix Trading I have supported many women to start their own businesses. It’s hard work stepping out of your comfort zone and attempting something you may not think you have the skills for. I’m a home school parent. I believe in lifelong learning and nurturing the passion to never stop learning. New ideas, new skills are all their waiting for your decision to motivate yourself and make a change. If you never take that step forward you will always be stuck in the same place. Who knows what you may achieve by just taking a chance one day, on a new idea, project or opportunity.

History of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day has been observed since to the early 1900’s. It grew out of the increasing frustration about the oppression of women in an increasingly industrialised era. A key moment occurred in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City. They were demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights for women.

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

In 1914 women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women’s solidarity. Russia in 1917, saw women strike for “bread and peace” in response to the death of over 2 million Russian soldiers in World War 1. International Women’s Day was not celebrated by the United Nations (UN) until1975.

Be Bold For Change

Since 1996, the UN has adopted an annual theme and in 2017 this is Be Bold for Change. You can follow this on social media with the tag #BeBoldForChange

The world has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation may feel that ‘all the battles have been won for women’ while many feminists from the 1970’s know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

Quotes are taken from the International Women’s Day official website. There you can read more about how to get involved with improving the lives of women around the World.

When I Grow Old…

I hope that when I’m old and have more grey hairs than I do now that I have a group of fun friends around me who want to keep the dance alive. My silver or wisdom highlights as my friends like to call them are creeping up on me! I would be happier I think to just wake up one day totally grey, for now I will take the ever increasing wisdom.

Send A Message of Support Through the Post

Let a woman know you are thinking about them, offer your support, your strength and your guidance. Write it out and post it. You may never know how much your words could mean to someone if you don’t share how you feel about them. Maybe, you just want to say thank you to a strong woman in your life who has helped you in the past. Be that strong woman and support for the next generation of girls and young women. Greeting cards are not just for birthdays, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day or Christmas! Although sending cards on those occasions is fantastic and increasing in popularity again. Survey results indicate that people would much rather receive a ‘real’ card with handwritten message than a Tweet, Facebook post or text message.

Friendship Greeting Cards

Do you really know when someone is having a rough time. Too often people put on a false front of being OK, of coping and being happy. Remember, to ask how someone is and really listen, look at their body language. Sometimes, we just need to talk through an issue to find a solution. Too many times you see news stories of people taking their own lives and friends saying, ‘I wish I knew it was that bad.’ or ‘I would have done anything to help if only I had known.’

Write a card, send them a message. Your card arriving in their letterbox may just be the very reason they call you, just to talk. Let someone know you’re thinking about them and that you value their friendship.

Next up are a couple of greeting card designs perfect for sending to a friend to let them know you care. For more ideas for Thinking Of You cards check out another post I wrote for Thinking Of You Week.
